PERSONAL STATEMENT
(applying to enter
the MBA program)
Background
I grew up and live in Kaoshiung, a major city
in the southern part of Taiwan. Last
year I graduated from Sun Yat-Sen National University in Taiwan with a bachelor degree in accounting. My parents started their business with a meager
saving. Over a period of 20 years they
developed the business into an enterprise of several hundred million U.S.
dollars. Today their company is listed
in the Taiwan stock exchange and employs over five hundred employees. I was raised with a lot of discipline and
taught to work hard and have respect for knowledge. I am grateful to my parents not only for
providing me with a nurturing environment, but also for what they have taught
me.
Practical Experience
In my sophomore year at university I worked part-time as a counselor to
children of deprived families who had problems at school. I learned to listen, to communicate and to
care. Later I ran a summer outdoor
program for these children and had a great summer. In my last year at university, I worked for the
dean of the Management School as a research assistant. I helped the professor gather and analyze
data. I learned from this job the
importance of being thorough, patient and meticulous.
Special Interest
Probably because of the influence of my parents, I am interested in
business strategies. I am always curious
as to why some businesses succeed and why some businesses fail. Because of this interest, I think a lot how
my parents’ enterprise may be expanded from Taiwan into China now that China’s economy is growing so fast.
I am also interested in the stock market. I read several books and keep myself
up-to-date with magazines on the subject.
Recently I invested a small amount of money in order to gain real world
experience of the stock market in Taiwan.
Reasons for Wanting to Attend Long
Island University
I am applying to enroll in the MBA program at Long Island University (“LIU”).
The business school at LIU is accredited by AACSB, a confirmation of the
school’s high academic standard. I like that the
school emphasizes also real world experiences in its teaching approach. The C.W. Post campus is only 45 minutes away
from New
York City. The proximity will enable me to visit New York City frequently and enjoy what the city has to
offer. The campus is only 30 minutes
from Flushing. I
heard that Flushing has a fast growing Chinatown where many people from Taiwan and China live.
I think I will visit Flushing a
lot especially when I feel homesick and want to have a good Chinese meal and buy
some Chinese grocery.
Plans for Work after Completing
University Study
I plan to join my parents in their enterprise of construction and real
estate brokerage in Taiwan.
Being the only child in the family, I believe that I have the duty to
carry on and expand what my parents have built.
As mentioned earlier, I think a lot how to expand the business from Taiwan into China. I
think hotel construction and management will be a good area to expand into. As its economy continues to grow, China will need a lot more hotels to accommodate
the growing number of visitors from all over the world.
I look forward to joining the LIU community. I want to learn and share my thoughts and experiences
with my fellow students.
